The Kinzua viaduct super structure.
Built-in 1882 the Kinzua Viaduct was the highest and longest viaduct in the world. It was built out of wrought iron and allowed the railroads to ship coal, oil, and lumber over the Kinzua Gorge. In 1902 the bridge was dismantled and rebuilt with steel to accommodate heavier loads. It was used continuously until 1959 when it was sold to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and became the centerpiece of the State Park. Restoration of the bridge started in 2002 but it was destroyed by a tornado before it was finished. The towers that were left standing were turned into the Kinzua Skyway.
