20' bust of James Madison
This is the bust of James Madison from the remains of the President's Park in Williamsburg. Artist David Adickesafter created these incredible busts after a visit to Mount Rushmore inspired him. He wanted to create a more intimate experience that allowed the visitors to walk among the busts of the presidents instead of viewing them from a distance.
After the President's Park failed the owner contacted a local Howard Hankins and asked him to take the busts and destroy them.
Instead, respecting the passion and effort of artist David Adickes, he rescued the heads and is working to preserve the artist's work.
He relocated the 42, 20-foot-tall busts to a swampy field on his property where they now sit waiting for their next adventure. As part of his effort to restore them, he opens his property to visitors about 8 days a year. The location and condition of the busts create a very dystopian feeling and I was incredibly fortunate to be in Williamsburg on one of those days to capture these incredible images of opportunity!
